Chapter Eleven

Night Terrors

At once a footman was sprinting out the front door and down the street for a doctor. Another footman helped James move Lady Montgomery to the settee. Meanwhile, Godric sniffed the bottle and the glass James had abandoned.

“Did you-”

“I had none of it,” James shouted back. “Help me!”

He gently patted Lady Montgomery’s cheeks. She did not respond.

“How much did she have?” Godric asked.

“No more than a sip.”

In a moment his valet was out the door. Rapidly vanishing footfalls told James the man was rushing to his private room.

“Lady Montgomery,” James fought to keep the panic from his voice. “Agatha?”

No response.

“Who delivered that bottle?” he clenched the collar of the remaining footman.

“I don’t know, my lord,” the man fumbled.

“Find out!” he shoved the sputtering man away and turned back to her.

Her breath felt lighter than a rose petal. Something hammered at his chest as James crouched next to her. All at once, instincts told him to do something, to run or strike someone or breathe his own life into her, but he sat motionless. There was nowhere to run, no one to strike- yet. There remained nothing to do but wait for his valet and the doctor.

After what seemed an eternity, Godric returned. The older man panted hard as he rushed to Lady Montgomery’s other side. Standing over the back of the settee, he uncorked a small vial.

“Open her mouth,” he instructed. James obeyed.

Milky white skin felt softer than the finest silks beneath his fingers. Fighting every sane rule of conduct, he forced his unworthy fingers to part her thin pink lips. A sinister liquid that looked darker than tar and as thick as mud rolled out of the vial and over her tongue. James saw her move. He hoped it was a flinch at the taste; some reaction that showed she could still fight to survive.

“Turn her on her side,” Godric ordered as he capped the vial. He tore away from the seat and found the metal wastepaper basket sitting beneath the desk. All the contents were tossed to the fireplace before he brought the basket back to James.

He had just managed to lean Lady Montgomery over the edge of the seat as the basket came to a stop below her. In a moment she coughed, sputtered, and wretched into it.

“Well done,” James heard himself say.

Godric hastily retrieved a kerchief from his overcoat and wiped her mouth clean. Though she was still unconscious, Lady Montgomery sputtered and wretched again. Once more the faithful valet patted her face clean. She had grown increasingly pale.

“Will she be all right?”

“I don’t know,” the other man replied with a plain but serious expression. Grey had long since taken over his head, but Godric still carried a great deal of strength. This was not the first dire circumstance the man had endured. He knew how to move quickly and act calmly to see the best results.

Beneath his hands, James could feel a steady rhythm of blood flow in Lady Montgomery’s wrist. He hoped
